What My Tinkering Session Taught Me About Personal Branding

I had the most amazing weekend! Even though I didn’t get much rest because there was a lot I needed to do, it was a very productive one for me and I got to tick off some major 2019 goals.

Since my first personal branding session for the Tony Elumelu Foundation (I will share some snippets from this session soon), I have been getting requests from different people to work with them as a personal branding consultant and help them to build a stronger personal brand.

As exciting as the requests are, I realized one thing – another income stream has opened up for me and I need to position myself properly to make the most of this new opportunity.

My first task was to include ‘Personal Brand Consultant’ in my brand and map out a strategy to leverage digital media to position myself in this space. I decided to have a personal training session with The Digital Tinker, an expert in all things Instagram and creative content development. I wanted to know about the latest Instagram enagement trends and how I could leverage this to achieve my strategic goal.

The session was mind-blowing to say the least. Even though I learnt all about the secrets of using Instagram effectively, I also leant some important things about personal branding as the session was going on. Want to know what they are? Keep reading!

1. Be Ready To Put In The Work. The reality of the times we live in today requires you to put in the necessary work and effort if you are going to stand out and make a difference. You cannot simply say you want to build a strong personal brand. That’s not enough. What steps do you need to take to achieve it?

2. Be Willing To Step Outside Your Comfort Zone.  In working with different individuals to develop their personal brands, I have realised many people let their personal weaknesses get in the way of their objectives. One thing I hear rather too frequently is, “Oh Adedoyin, I am very private. I don’t want to put my life out there.” I understand the desire to be private but you can’t let that stop you from building your personal brand. Being an introvert may be your comfort zone but you need to put yourself out there and talk about (and also OWN!) the great work that you do.

3. Be Willing To Ask For Help. One thing that amazed me during my tinkering session was the amount of Apps that have been created to simplify creative content creation process. It was mind-boggling. As I went home and tried the different Apps, I understood the power of information and most importantly, asking for help. If there are areas where you have been struggling, whether it is storytelling, pitching yourself to the media or mastering how to properly use social media, you must be willing to ask for help. There are people who know what you want to learn and there are people who have a track record with what you are trying to achieve. Don’t hesitate to reach out, ask for help and learn what they know.

Those are the three key things I learnt from my tinkering session about personal branding but I will leave you with one more thing – Have a plan. You want to build your personal brand? Sit down and figure out the ‘how’ of it. Which platforms will you like to be featured on? Which networks do you want your personal brand to have access to? What overall goal do you want to achieve and what tools do you need?
